Five Things Friday-8

Five Things Friday #8

Five things Friday #8 and I am hoping that the things I am sharing are useful.

So last week I was listening to my usual podcast on my way to work and Rob Dial started to talk about Ikigai. I found it very interesting and thought about it once I got to work. Well, my tutor group had an assembly and we had an external speaker come in.

Can you imagine my shock when she started talking about Ikigai! I’d never heard of the word and then twice in one morning! So obviously I wanted to know more about it!

I’m now reading more about it. Maybe it will help me find my next job!

Instagram Post

There seem to be a few people struggling with injuries at the moment, myself included so I just wanted to share this post for anyone else that may need to read it.

Follow Friday

I know that they say you shouldn’t talk to strangers online, but I am so glad that I started following and talking to @lexielovestorun. She is an amazing runner and so inspiring. Make sure you check out her Instagram page and give her a follow. You will not regret it.

The Running Awards

I was fortunate enough to attend The Running Awards last year. They have announced the shortlist for the awards. There are so many amazing people and brands up for awards, so as runners I feel it’s important for us to vote. So, take a look and vote here.

Super Halfs

I feel like I totally missed this, so apologies if this is old news for you! As you know I am a sucker for a challenge and have shared my desire to complete all the World Marathon Majors. Well, last week when I was at the Running Show Alistair told me about the Super Halfs challenge. It’s a half marathon challenge, featuring FIVE half marathons in some pretty cool cities; Lisbon, Prague, Copenhagen, Cardiff and Valencia.

When I looked into it, you could get a series pass and you have 36 months to run all of them. Unfortunately, this has now sold out, but when you register they give you a passport number, so you can keep track of any that you enter independently. It looks awesome and I know that I would love to run some of these half marathons and eventually run the whole series! When am I going to win the lotto!!!

Power Hour Podcast

I have been following The Runner Beans for years now. I love her honest nature. Well, Charlie is on the Power Hour Podcast this week and it is a really good listen. So, I know I have shared in previously but check out the Power Hour Podcast.

Improve With Luke

If you are like me and possibly almost every runner, you are not so great at stretching. I am currently struggling with a tight right hip so my go-to is @improvewithluke. The videos are very clear and just help remind you of stretches to do.

February Photo Challange

So this is a little premature, but it is about to start! So each February for the last two years I have run a little photo challenge on Instagram. Basically I suggest a theme every day and we post a photo linked to the theme and use the hashtag #rularunsphotochallenge. It’s just for fun, so if you fancy joining in, make sure you are following me on Instagram. It doesn’t matter if you don’t do it every day, just jump on and join in when you can.

Five Things Friday-6

Five Things Friday #6…

Five things Friday #6 is here! But before I share I need to just apologise to @thischapruns as I shared that he was running Manchester Marathon in my last post, but it is actually Southampton Marathon! I am blaming jetlag, but who knows…. sorry!

Here are the FIVE things that I have been doing/using/found this week that I think are worthy of sharing.

National Running Show

This weekend sees the running world take over Birmingham. I LOVE race expo’s read here and here. I have not been to the running show before, but I am expecting it to be like the London Marathon Expo. Are you going? Who are you most looking forward to seeing? I will be there on Sunday, probably not until the afternoon as my daughter will not miss Junior Parkrun!

Since coming back from Australia my sleep has been really erratic. I was also starting to get frustrated as I haven’t been getting up early to go to the gym as I was just so tired. So I started to read about sleep – I am now really keen to read the book by Matthew Walker, ‘Why We Sleep’.

Sleep is so important and all the broken sleep of recent weeks has just taken its toll on me. Hopefully, by next week I’ll be back in the gym, but for now, if you want to read more about sleep, I like this article from

Marathon Talk turns 10

I know I have mentioned this podcast previously, but it has just turned 10 I thought I would just give it another shout out. If you haven’t listened to an episode try the birthday episode now.

Instagram Post

I love this post from @simplysuzys on influencers.

View this post on Instagram

The brutal truth about ads. Gulp. Influencers get a lot of hate for doing them. And not a lot of love for how much freaking time they spend NOT doing them. If influencers wanted to, every single post and story could be an ad. They could go full Greys Anatomy and run and ad for every five minutes of content. But they don't, because they love and respect their communities more than the money. ⁣ ⁣ Most influencers got into Instagram and showed up for years, adding value day in and day out with zero expectation of ever getting a dime. Ads weren't even a thing when most started. Me, I've been doing this almost every day for seven years. In the real world if you saw a woman hustling full time to support her family and earn her children's tuition some may applaud her. But often some see that same work ethic in an influencer and are annoyed, possibly even resentful and maybe kinda bitter. ⁣ ⁣ Being and influencer didn't just "happen" to anyone. What you don't see is the hours. Thousands of them, spent building community, working hard to add value, to master a craft. Making friends, giving support of strangers. Hours spent getting better at writing, at photography, at learning how in the crappp to help those in our community. Worrying about members, pouring in to people they will never meet. Being on their phone more than a freaking iPhone tester. Anybody else work part time for free for years? ⁣ So, I hope when you see a #ad you won't be annoyed. That you'll appreciate it maybe like a well thought out commercial from a woman who has built trust offering up pieces of herself. And who has built something worth being paid for. ⁣ ⁣ I'd love to open up a discussion on what influencers can do to help change the stigma around ads?

A post shared by Suzy Holman (@simplysuzys) on

It is an interesting read, as people do seem to resent influencers or feel jealous etc. But if these people were in sales in an office no one would think anything of it. What is your take on this article? Let me know in the comments.

If you need a positive account to follow, I suggest you follow @runningmrjones. His poems are amazing and so inspiring.

Five Things Friday-5

Five Things Friday #5…

Five things Friday #5. I am impressed that I am on number 5! I’m not always the best at keeping things going and I have had less time online this week. But here goes and I hope some of these are of interest to you. Let me know below.

Sharing FIVE things that I have been doing/using/found this week that I think are worthy of sharing.

MND Research

If you have been following me for a while, you will know that finding a cure for Motor Neurone Disease is something close to my heart. I run often to raise money and awareness for the MNDA in the hope that one day there will be a cure.

Virtual Run – Bushfire Relief Run

The fires that are happening in Australia are awful. The photos and videos that are being shared on Social Media are heart-breaking. As usual, the running community has come together to try and raise funds with a virtual run.

A runner in Australia had teamed up with Strava to host a virtual run. Find out more information here. Be quick as the challenge starts today.

Nike Vapourfly Next%

If you have watched any marathon in the last year, you are bound to have seen that the leading group are almost certainly wearing the record-breaking Nike shoes. Well, an article in runner world says that they are likely to be banned. Read here.

Five things Friday - Nike Vapourfly Next %

So what do you think? Do you think that these should be banned? Or should other brands be stepping up to compete with Nike? They do appear to be giving huge gains to those that are wearing them!

Another blog to follow if you are running the Manchester Marathon and would like to read about someone else’s journey. This Chap Runs (Jack) took part in the Berlin Marathon last year and is now tackling his 2nd marathon training cycle.

If you missed my weekly recap last week from Manchester you can find it here. Better still, add your email to the subscription box on the right and never miss another post.

Five things Friday - parkrun logo

Surely EVERYONE has heard about Parkrun? They organise, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. They are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in. You can run or walk them.

I was lucky enough to take part in a club takeover at Irchester Parkrun last weekend. This is where my club provides nearly all the volunteering roles. My role was to write the run report. If you would like to read, click here.

Five Things Friday #3…

Sharing FIVE things that I have been doing/using/found this week that I think are worthy of sharing.

For clarity, none of the products mentioned have paid me to write this (I wish)

Hills, hills and hills

On Monday I posted on Instagram about my hill session at run club. I asked who actually likes hill sessions? Well, one person did reply saying they did (Thanks Sophie) but love them or hate them, they are good for you. My coach shared a really good article on hills, so click here to have a read.

Marathon Running May Be Good for Your Knees

Well, you don’t see a headline like that very often, so I had to share, click here to read the article. At a time where we are more likely to be spending more time with family, you are bound to hear the common phrase of “all that running you do is bad for your knees!” Well, is it really?

Running is a cheap sport! Is it???

Well, I know that I have written about this before (read here), but this blog post by The PHD Runner is a really interesting read. Go take a read.

Did you hear…

All the hype about adding how much exercise that you will need to do to burn off the calories eaten. WTAF!

The Royal Society for Public Health says most people do not understand the meaning of calories and fat levels in terms of energy balance. It has been calling for the introduction of “physical activity calorie equivalent or expenditure” (Pace) food labelling. It tells consumers how many minutes or miles of exercise they need to do to burn off the calories in a particular product.

I am actually so shocked by this. I agree that obesity has to be addressed, but surely better education is needed. This doesn’t take into consideration the nutrients within the food.

Anna, from the running channel was interviewed by Sky News

I also like the post that Zanna Van Dijk shared on the topic.

I have been using Canva lots to design Instastories, resize photos for LinkedIn and general digital designs. You can create yourself an account for free and it has lots of great templates you can use. Well worth taking a look.

Strava Hack

I feel like this little GEM may actually blow your mind just a little bit. I was just going to bed on Monday night and Susie Chan shared this on her Instagram stories. This just had to be shared. Watch and be amazed! Also, if you are not already following her – you need too!

Blog Post

I came across this blog post on LinkedIn and it is so thought-provoking. Well worth a read.

Get Involved

I have been taking part in the #ASICSADVENT on Instagram via Jenna Wilkinson. Each day both Jenna and Geoff open the advent calendar and behind each day there is an exercise to complete. Day 1 was 1-minute plank, Day 2 and 2-minute wall sit, Day 3 3 x 30 seconds deadbugs, Day 4 was 4 x 1 minute high knees, Day 5, 5 minute meditation.

If you are not already involved, get involved now, you may have missed a few days, but starting now means you won’t miss any more!

Nearly forgot day 4!

Listening to…

Now that I have a little longer commute to work, I am loving listening to Marathon Talk again. I have listened on and off for years. But now they have more presenters and the additions have only added to the podcasts.

The interviews are really interesting and they always discuss relevant topics, so if you haven’t listened, go give it a listen.
