Welcome to ‘Getting to know…’ number 3. This week I am thrilled that Emma agreed to take part. I often say about how much I love the running community. Well, I followed Emma via Instagram and we exchanged a few messages.

I then was lucky to meet Emma at the running show in January. She is just as lovely as I thought she would be. Happy reading…

How long have you been running?

oh wow…um, about 4/5 years.

What made you start running?

My best friend ran her first marathon, in Amsterdam, and I was so inspired by her, I decided to download the Couch to 5K app and never looked back!

Why do you run now?

For a lot of reasons. Mainly because I really enjoy it, but also because it’s a way of releasing anxiety and stress. A chance for my mind to wander and for me to think.

What was your last event?

My last event was a local 10K

Favourite thing about running?

Sharing it/running with friends.

Worst thing about running?

Runners tummy…!!!

What one piece of advice would you give to a beginner?

Don’t compare yourself/pace to other runners. Although very much easier said than done.

Best piece of advice given to you?

You do you.

Favourite race distance?

Half Marathon

Funniest thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

Playing dodge the jack Russell one morning along the river.

Face planting into a bush trying to avoid a group of cyclists (although it was not funny at the time!)

Having the heavens open, and I mean rain, hail thunder and lightning during the last few miles of a really windy 10K

Most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

Sh#ting my pants! THANK GOD I had just arrived home!

On average, how many miles do you run per month?

During marathon training 40+ miles a week and around 20 when I’m not.

Do you belong to a running club?

No, I don’t.

Do you do any other forms of exercise in addition to running?

Yes! I do pilates, PT twice a month, a couple of exercise/strength-based classes a week and sometimes yoga.

Favourite pre-race/pre-long run meal?

Porridge with peanut butter and some form of fruit

Favourite post-run meal?

Ooo, tricky as I find it very hard to eat after running. Most of the time I have a smooth and my go-to is banana, protein powder, almond, peanut butter and spinach.

Do you have any superstition?

No, not really.

What is your biggest achievement sport wise?

Running the London Marathon for Charity

If you were granted one wish related to running, what would it be?

To be tummy trouble free!!

Yay, other runners did actually want to join in, so welcome to ‘Getting to know….’ number 2. If you missed the first one, you can read it here.

One of the best things to come out of my dad having MND is the people I have met through Run MND. Sarah is one of those people and she is awesome!

How long have you been running?

I used to be very sporty at school and would compete in cross country and track events.  Then my teenage and early twenties took over, and I didn’t run for years.  I’d say I have probably been running again for about 7 or 8 years now.

What made you start running?

I initially started to lose weight and try to get fit after having my daughter 11 years ago.  I then signed up for a 5k, to raise some money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which was going to be my one and only event. However, I got the bug and have pretty much been running since.

Why do you run now?

I run for my sanity.  After a bad day at work, there is nothing better than pulling on my trainers and either heading out of the front door or onto the treadmill, to pound out some miles, even if it is only a couple.

I also still run to raise money for the MND Association in memory of my dad.

What was your last event?

I have managed one 5k event this year – a run for chocolate. What’s not to love about a bag full of chocolate at the end of a race?

Three events which I should have run have been cancelled/postponed – London Winter 10k due to the storms in February and then the London Landmarks Half Marathon and Manchester Marathon due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is your next event?

Who knows – the next one should be Endure24 Reading but I believe this has been postponed until September and I am not sure I can make the date so may have to defer to next year.

I have booked to run the Bedford Half Marathon at the beginning of September and if things are back to some sort of reality by then I may change my registration to the new 20-mile event as a training run for the newly scheduled Manchester Marathon.

Favourite thing about running?

Headspace – I struggle with my mental health at times and running definitely helps with this.

Also the running community and the friends it has brought into my life – running friends really do make the best friends.

What one piece of advice would you give to a beginner?

We have all been beginners at some point. Noone goes out one day, decides they are going to start running and completes a marathon.  Take it easy, don’t be hard on yourself and enjoy getting out there and meeting other members of the running community. 

Favourite race distance?

I don’t particularly have a favourite but if I really had to choose I think half marathon – the sense of accomplishment I feel after running 13.1 miles is amazing.  I haven’t run a marathon yet but am hoping that the rescheduled Manchester Marathon goes ahead later in the year.

Funniest thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

Ruth trying to teach me to perfect a jump shot on our last lap of Endure24 last year. I think the 5-mile lap ended up taking us over an hour and a half (I would like to add that I did master the jump shot by the end of that lap).

Most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

Last year whilst running the LLHM, I got very excited at seeing the MND cheer squad along the embankment about 5k from the finish.  As I was waving and grinning like a madwoman and I didn’t manage to pick my feet up as much as I should. I stumble towards the floor, but thankfully disaster was averted by a lovely man from the cheer squad who managed to catch me before I hit the deck!!

On average, how many miles do you run per month?

At the moment this is very variable.   Last month I ran about 80 miles whilst racking up the marathon training but this month I’m much lower as I’m only running on the treadmill at the moment and am trying to work towards an improved 5k time.

Do you belong to a running club?

Yes – a great friend set up a running group in our local community running C25K groups a couple of years ago and since then we’ve been running together regularly.

Do you do any other forms of exercise in addition to running?

I also cycle. Although, this week was the first time I’ve got my bike out since RideLondon100 last August.

I have also been getting involved in some lockdown workouts with one of the guys who used to play for our local running club.  He’s a qualified PT and is doing live workouts 5 times a week for free during the lockdown which is awesome.

Favourite pre-race/pre-long run meal?

Anything pasta as long as it is smothered in grated cheddar.

Favourite post-run meal?

Chocolate – that’s definitely a meal isn’t it?!?!

Do you have any superstition?

Nothing related to running and race day, although I get a bit anxious if I forget my Garmin.

What is your biggest achievement sport wise?

After being out of action for a few months with ankle ligament damage I completed the Bedford Twilight 10k and the Half Marathon on the same weekend (I only found out on the Wednesday that I had won a place to run the half marathon on the Sunday so training definitely didn’t make an appearance for that one.

If you were granted one wish related to running, what would it be?

Infinite pairs of trainers and leggings.

Getting to know….. Ruth.

I had an idea to run a series of interviews with runners. All types of runner. There are so many amazing people and causes out there but not everyone has a blog. So why not use this blog to promote some people and share their stories.

I am going to keep the questions the same for all interviews (although some people may choose not to answer all of them and that’s ok.) So to give you a look at the types of questions (all feedback welcome) I thought I’d kick it off. I know you will already know most of what is in my answers but you might learn something new too!

How long have you been running?

I don’t remember a time when I haven’t run. Playing basketball from the age of 9, I would always run to keep fit for that. I used to run more around the time of the Olympics as I would always be inspired.

Probably around 2009, is when I started running for running sake.

What made you start running?

I ran to get match fit for games to start with. Then I started running as I enjoyed the buzz after my first ‘race’. Then after my daughter was born, I got back to running as I wanted to lose weight.

Why do you run now?

I run for my mental health, weight control and as I love being part of the running community.

What was your last event?

Bath Half Marathon. Read about it here.

What is your next event?

Who knows? I was signed up to a few 10K’s and Manchester Marathon which have all been cancelled. You can find out my next races here.

Favourite thing about running?

The people it has brought into my life. The community that I feel part of. The feel-good factor it can give me.

Worst thing about running?

The fact that after running for 11 years, I can still go out and feel like I have never run before!

What one piece of advice would you give to a beginner?

Don’t put pressure on yourself. I think everyone thinks they should be able to run 10 minutes non-stop straight away, but few of us can. Walking is not cheating, it is just a building block.

Best piece of advice given to you?

Remember this is a hobby. Enjoy it. If you are not enjoying it, take a break.

Favourite race distance?

Although I seem to keep signing myself up to Marathons, I think I prefer half marathon distance. The training doesn’t take over your life as a marathon does.

Funniest thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

When I took part in my inter-schools cross-county championship, I was in about 6th place. The leader and this ahead of me, went the wrong way, which put me in 1st place. I was over taken in the last 100m, so came 2nd. Then I got selected for the County.

I had to confess what had happened, there was no way I could have competed a County level!

Most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you whilst running?

Having to do the poop shuffle for a mile during a training run. My poor running partner had to keep running on and back as I shuffled, bum clenched desperately trying to make it to the toilet. It was the longest mile of my life!

On average, how many miles do you run per month?

Around 60-80 miles.

Do you belong to a running club?

Yes, Team Balancise. Best decision I ever made was to join a club.

Do you do any other forms of exercise in addition to running?

I try to do some strength work and yoga. I know that if I could be disciplined with them, it would help with my running. But, when times get hectic or I get tired they are the first to go!

Favourite pre-race/pre-long run meal?

Cheese and Tomato pizza the night before, porridge the morning before.

Favourite post-run meal?

Curry – probably a Jalfrezi.

Do you have any superstition?

No, I don’t think I do. Although, I’m starting to think Marathon nails have to be a must from now on. I didn’t for Chicago and it wasn’t my best run!

What is your biggest achievement sport wise?

Playing Basketball for England. Completing 5 Marathons.

If you were granted one wish related to running, what would it be?

To be able to run NYC Marathon every year!

Treadmill Running

Overthinking and Rambling.

Having all this free time gives us lots of thinking time. I am prone to overthinking and it is not always positive. Keeping myself occupied helps, so I have been spending a fair bit of time on this blog. This then got me thinking about why I keep this blog? Why not just keep a diary for me?

One of my positives from spending a ridiculous amount of time on Instagram was finding an offer on Hannah’s story. It talked about learning a new skill. I got hooked on the idea of learning to take better photographs and gaining better blogging ideas.

So I gave it a go. The offer allowed me to get access to www.skillshare.com website for two months free of charge. You put in all your payment details, but it says that you can cancel your membership at any time. I’m not totally sure I will be able to keep it going for long, but as with everything at the moment, I’m not thinking too far ahead! I immediately joined two classes; iPhone Photography and 5 Secrets to Developing the Blogging (and Writing) Habit: How to Beat Writers Block Forever.

Writing

The writing course encouraged me to do a Free Write for 15 minutes daily. I have loved doing it. I’m pretty sure it was supposed to be helping me with ideas for this blog, but it has ended up being a bit of a journal. And NO one wants to read about all of my insecurities!

I have managed to complete the free write 5 times so far and I think that it is something that I will keep up. Getting out of bed early is proving to be a challenge at the moment, is this the same for anyone else? The idea of getting up before the rest of the house and doing 15 minutes of writing each morning really appeals.

Running

Running on the treadmill is still happening. The weather has been glorious and seeing everyone running outside has had me tempted. I just feel safe staying indoors and using the treadmill. It is better to be safe than sorry.

My frequent use of the treadmill has made me realise that not only is the distance and speed out, but the timing is too! When I start my watch at the exact same time as the treadmill, after 60 minutes they are 30 seconds adrift. Not totally convinced the timing could be out too, I used my phone to time too. Yep, the treadmill was 30 seconds slower than both my phone and watch. Lucky that running is about distance/pace/time at the moment.

Zoom

Like every other person at the moment, video calling is keeping me connected to family and friends. I’ve used WhatsApp, Messenger, HouseParty App and Zoom.

We seem to have stuck on Zoom and last week I took part in a family quiz and hosted two. They are really good fun and I am looking forward to completing some more. Google came to the rescue when setting my questions, so if anyone has any good websites suggestions for quiz questions, please let me know.

If you are still trying to keep children entertained, here are some websites that I have used in school which can be good fun. (They are not just for children!)

So going back to my opening paragraph, what’s the point of this blog? This is an extract from my free write on day 1.

I’m not a coach, so I can not offer coaching tips. If I was to take the course to become a coach, I would just be another coach in an already saturated field. The same as a personal trainer, dieticians, life coaches etc. I have tried the idea of doing race recaps, but I’m not sure that I race enough for this for it to be my only offering.

There is no need for me to share it all, but this is how I have been thinking. Then I realised that I am probably thinking too much and not just enjoying the process. Does it really matter if I don’t post all the time? Does it matter if what I write veers off running? It’s just my ramblings and people can read if they want or skip if they don’t.

I would like this blog to be useful, so I did come up with one idea. Why not use this to promote people that do great things but don’t always have a blog to share it on? Like a runners interview. It can be a variety of people, sharing their experiences, their fundraising link, blogs, social media account etc. Sharing is caring, right? What do you think?
